About Montenegro

Montenegro (Montenegrin: Crna Gora – translated as “Black Mountain”) is a country in Southeastern Europe. It is located on the Adriatic Sea and is a part of the Balkans, sharing borders with Serbia to the northeast, Bosnia and Herzegovina to the north and west, Kosovo to the east, Albania to the southeast, the Adriatic Sea and Croatia to the southwest, and maritime boundary with Italy. Podgorica is the capital and largest city.

Montenegro may be small in terms of area, but it boasts stunning mountainous landscapes, dramatic coastlines, historic monuments, and truly beautiful walled towns.

Although Montenegro's magnificent seaside scenery is best known among travelers, its mountainous inland has some grand panoramic views to offer, too. The country shares the large freshwater Lake Skadar with neighboring Albania. It has National Park status and offers great opportunities for hiking, bird watching and wildlife spotting.

Montenegro has really developed as an 'Adventure Tourism' destination in recent years. A number of companies provide: White Water Rafting (along Europe's deepest canyon), Canyoning, Mountain Biking, Climbing, Wind and Kitesurfing, Horse Riding, Hiking and Paragliding.

Montenegro makes a fantastic location for all Mountain activities, much of the interior is an uninhabited mountain and forest wilderness, with dramatic scenery and some of Europe's last bears, wolves and occasionally lynx.

In addition to the standard European and Mediterranean cuisine, Montenegro offers a variety of healthy food products and local specialties.

Montenegrins are generally, like most people in the Balkans, very hospitable and welcoming to visitors.

Durmitor

Durmitor is a stunning limestone massif located in Northern Montenegro that belongs to the Dinaric Alps or Dinarides.

Durmitor National Park, created in 1952., also includes the canyons of Tara, Sušica, and Draga rivers covering an area of 390 square kilometers. It is the largest protected area in Montenegro and it was inscribed on the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 1980.

There are 48 peaks above 2.000 meters above sea level and Bobotov Peak is the highest (2,523 meters). One of the most prominent attractions of Durmitor mountain is 18 glacial lakes (locally known as "mountain eyes") of which the most famous is the Black Lake.

One theory of the name Durmitor is that it is derived from Balkan Romance-Vlach, meaning 'sleeping place' (cognate with English dormitory).

Another theory is that the name was given by the Celts, and the meaning would be anything from 'water from the mountain' to 'ridged mountain'.
